Gossip Girls

Wednesday, 18 August 2010.

Let’s face it…. most girls like to gossip. We are simply fascinated about the lives of others! It seems almost inherent within our nature that we like to talk about others, know what’s going on in their worlds and even at times, spread rumours. Gossip comes in many shapes and forms. It can be spoken, written, disguised in prayer or an informal chat. Above all, gossip causes dissension and destruction.

Proverbs 18:8 says, “Listening to gossip is like eating cheap candy; do you really want that junk in your belly (The Message)?” The NLT states it like this, “Rumours are dainty morsels that sink deep into one’s heart.”

When you speak or listen to gossip, it burrows into your heart. It then infuses throughout your perspective of that person or situation, including your speech, thoughts and actions. Like a domino effect, gossip encourages you to “pass it on” and before you know it, you’re playing your very own game of Chinese Whispers.

Here are some questions to ponder in relation to gossip:

  1. When was the last time that you gossiped about another person or situation?
  2. What is your response when you are listening to someone who is gossiping?
  3. What can you do to grow in this area so that gossip is not in your heart?

A Girl of Wisdom uses her speech to build relationships and uplift the people around her. She does not listen to gossip or allow it to seep into her heart. Her mandate is to invest in her relationships by speaking kindly to all who are in her world.
