How do you treat your parents?

Monday, 30 August 2010.

As a high school teacher, I often hear students talking about their parents. Unfortunately, most of the time the things that are said are negative. I hear students complain about what’s going on at home, how they are being disciplined, and even sometimes how they are not being disciplined! There’s a wide variety of complaints and concerns raised in these conversations, however, for some teenagers, there seems to be an underlying attitude of dislike for their parents.

Everyone has different parenting experiences so whenever you talk about parents, this opens up a whole gamut of emotions. Some of you reading this blog have had an amazing upbringing, with parents who have displayed great love and affection towards you. For others, your experience may be the complete opposite of this and I’m sure that there are many who fall in between.

Proverbs 30:11 (MSG) says, “Don’t curse your father or fail to bless your mother.” This begs the question, “How do you treat your parents?” If they were asked by a friend how you treated them, what would they say?

A Girl of Wisdom honours and respects her parents. She shows love, kindness and thoughtfulness towards them in her words and actions. I know this is difficult to do in some home environments, but I encourage you to show respect to your parents and remember, parenting isn’t always easy!

This week, think about how you can practically do this. Perhaps you can offer to cook dinner for a night, do the dishes, tidy your room (without being asked!) or write a lovely note to your mum and dad telling them how much you love and appreciate them. Be creative in your endeavours to show love to your parents!
