Sterling Silver Words

Friday 10th September 2010

I’ve been thinking a lot about the power of our words. I remember being horribly bullied in high school. Girls can be so cruel with their words. Have you heard the phrase, “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me”? What a lie! At least bones heal in 6 to 8 weeks… some hearts remain broken for a lifetime as a result of people’s words. Do you know what I mean?

Proverbs 10:20 says The words of the godly are like sterling silver; the heart of a fool is worthless. What a beatiful comparison! I love sterling silver jewellery! Especially when it comes in a green box with a white ribbon… ahhh… Tiffany & Co… sorry, getting sidetracked…

A Girl of Wisdom understands that her words are gifts to the person she is saying them too. Likewise, your words will either be an amazing gift (sterling silver jewellery!) or they will be a disappointing gift (foolish and worthless).

If you’re reading this today and have been wounded by the words of others, I’d like to say that I’m sorry that those cruel words were spoken to you. The words of your past do not have to shape the direction of your future.

Let’s be girls and women who think before we speak. Let’s speak words that are encouraging, positive and helpful, rather than pulling others down with criticism, gossip and negativity.

Let’s speak “sterling silver words.”
