Cocktails or Mocktails? The alcohol question.

Monday 20th September 2010

I was recently asked about my views on alcohol… to drink or not to drink? That was the question. And my teenage audience went deadly quiet (I wish they were like that when attempting to teach Shakespeare!).

Being in the government education system, I am not permitted to promote one faith above another. But the great thing about Godly principles is that they transcend culture and beliefs- they ring true in a person’s heart despite what they may believe.

Proverbs 20:1 says Wine produces mockers; liquor leads to brawls. Whoever is led astray by drink cannot be wise.

I don’t think the question is whether or not alcohol in itself is good or bad. The questions should be- how old is the drinker? Why are they drinking? How do they behave when they are drinking? When you start answering these questions, I think it becomes clear whether or not you should be drinking alcohol. As today’s verse suggests- are you “led astray” by alcohol?

Back to my teenage audience… Firstly, I reminded them of Australian law- under age? Forget it! As simple as that. Of course, some parents and caregivers allow their under age children to have alcohol at home for supervised special occassions- the responsibility rests with them.

What about when it’s legal for you to drink? Some people believe that they shouldn’t drink at all. I respect that- they clearly have reasons why they choose not too. But what if you do want to drink? Then the other 2 questions become relevant: Why are you drinking? How do you behave when you are drinking?

A Girl of Wisdom is pretty smart when it comes to alcohol. She knows that alcohol in itself is neither good nor bad. She understands that it’s about who is drinking, why they are drinking and what happens when they drink.

Think about these questions when pondering whether to have the cocktail or the mocktail!
