Speak up- you have a voice!

Tuesday 25 January 2011

I have been thinking a lot lately about how much pain and heartache could be prevented if people simply chose to speak up and defend those who are being mistreated. I remember many times during high school where I chose to remain silent when the “popular group” were bullying their latest victim. Why did I remain silent? Because I was scared that the bullies would turn their attention towards me- sound familiar?

Proverbs 31:8 (NLT) says, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves…” How can we put this verse into practice? Here are two ideas-

1. Be aware of what is happening around you… Interestingly, many people don’t speak up about something because they do not even know it is happening! Make sure that you know how your family & friends are going… Make sure that you pay attention to what is going on around you, whether it be at school, at university or at your workplace… Make sure you know what is happening in your community, country and around the world.

2. Be willing to get involved in another person’s life… Another reason why many people don’t speak up about something is because once you speak up, you need to follow through with action, which usually means getting involved in the lives of others. Telling a group of bullies to leave their victim alone is one thing; becoming that victim’s friend and inviting them to hang out in your group is another.

A Girl of Wisdom is aware of what is going on around her and is willing to actively be involved in the lives of others. I pray that you will be a courageous girl who chooses to speak up… You have a voice.
