How to keep your heart in good health!

 Sunday 6 February 2011.

Have you ever had a heart check-up at your doctors? They’ll listen to your heart beat, measure your blood pressure, perhaps give you a blood test or take an x-ray to determine if this vital organ is fit and healthy.

Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.”

The heart is connected to every part of your body. From a medical perspective, it provides every organ and tissue with life, that is, oxygen and blood. You protect your heart by eating a balanced diet and exercise.

In this verse, the meaing of “heart” is the essence of who you are and includes your moral, spiritual and intellectual life. So how do you protect your heart in the proverbial sense? Here are a few thoughts:

1. What are your five senses absorbing? What you see, hear, taste, touch and smell affects your heart. This pretty much relates to everything we do in life! So… a few examples include being mindful of what you watch on TV, the books and magazines that you read and the music that you listen to.

2. Choose your friends wisely. Friends influence one another. You spend a lot of time with them, so ensure that they are the kind of people who also value good things like truth and wisdom.

3. What are you thinking about? A Girl of Wisdom thinks positively. She acknowledges the negatives in life, yet doesn’t dwell on them. Her thoughts are wholesome and true.

This week, I encourage you to think about the state of your heart. Let’s be women who understand the importance of our hearts and who know how to protect it!
