What you see may not be the truth.

Wednesday 15th June 2011

Every now and again, I like to watch the Hollywood red carpet events. For a few minutes, I flick on the television and look at the dresses that the actresses have chosen to wear, their accessories and don’t forget the hair! They walk down that red carpet, cameras flashing, the crowds cheering and they look so happy and radiant.

However, it’s interesting that only days after one of these celebrity events, the media is filled with stories about some of these very same actresses- stories of broken relationships, marriages ending in divorce, eating disorders, drug addictions and drunken nights on the town. Such a contrast to the glamour of the red carpet days earlier.

Proverbs 14:13 (NLT) says, “Laughter can conceal a heavy heart, but when the laughter ends, the grief remains.”  Another version of the bible (NKJV) puts it like this- “Even in laughter the heart may sorrow.”

It can be so easy to compare yourself with girls and women around you. Thanks to social media, we have 24/7 access to status updates and photos that paint a snapshot of another person’s life. But that’s all it is- a snapshot- a snapshot created by the owner of that profile. And what you see may not be the complete truth.

The next time you find yourself comparing your life with someone else based on what you see on the surface, always remember that there is more to people than what often meets the eye. A Girl of Wisdom is slow to make judgements and chooses not to fall victim to comparison and jealousy.

She understands that what she sees may not be the truth.
