Three Thoughts on Overcoming Fear.

Monday 5 December 2011

I know why I am afraid of spiders and indeed, the general population of arthropods and insects that bite. I wasn’t born with a fear of them. It is something that developed in my life and one time when I was thinking about it, I believe God popped a memory into my mind. It was of the very first time I was ever afraid of those biting little creepy crawlies.

You see, one summer when I was about 8, I was bushwalking with my family. My shoe laces had become undone and I sat down on a rock to tie them up again. Little did I know that under that rock lived a large colony of red bull ants. Naturally, they protected their home and I was covered in one-inch sized ants and their bites in the process. That experience was the beginning of my fear of little creatures that bite.

What are you afraid of? This is the question we asked in our last blog. Fear has the unfortunate ability of permeating throughout many areas of life, often restricting and inhibiting our ability to live life to the full as God intended. So how can we address fear in our lives? Here are 3 simple thoughts, by no means an exhaustive list, to start the ball rolling.

1. Acknowledge your fears to God. Don’t allow fear to hide in the corners of your heart. Say what it is out loud. Write it down. Bringing fear into the light tends to help lose some of its grip and power over you. Say, “God, I am afraid of…….”

2. Ask God to help you overcome your fears. God is our Healer, Restorer and Comforter. Fear does not come from him, as it says in 2 Timothy 1:7  (NLT), “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.” God will guide you through this journey. Ask Him to show you the source of your fear and to heal you.

3. Seek help from a trusted friend or trained counsellor when needed. If fear is at a point in your life where it is gripping you, turn to a friend or counsellor. Someone you know who will be able to help you, along with God, to walk through your fears. Proverbs 27:9 (NLT) says, “The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.” There are many great counsellors out there who are well trained in helping others overcome fear.

A Girl of Wisdom is not untouched by fear, however, she does not allow it to consume her life. Through her relationship with God, she delves into the journey of becoming free from unhealthy fear as she continues to put her trust and faith in Him.
