The greatest gift of all.

Saturday 17th December 2011

I love this time of the year! With Christmas just around the corner, many of us are super busy planning menus, making Christmas baked goods, writing cards, stocking up on groceries, organising travel plans and let’s not forget… buying and wrapping Christmas presents!

It is such a lovely thing to exchange gifts. There is something special about opening up a present that you know was especially chosen for you by someone who you love and who loves you too. Receiving gifts make us feel treasured, significant and thought of.

Likewise, it is a wonderful feeling watching someone open up a gift that you chose and bought for them! It’s so much fun watching their eyes light up, a big grin appear on their face and hearing the exclamations of appreciation.

John 3:16 (MSG) says, “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life.”

As we enter into this Christmas season, let us not forget the reason why this celebration exists. Long before we started decorating trees, roasting turkeys and wrapping presents, God gave us a divine gift… the gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, who was tortured for our sins and crucified on a lonely cross.

The amazing thing about this gift is that many more gifts overflow as a result… forgiveness, a fresh start, assurance of going to heaven when you pass away from this earth, a relationship with God who loves you and who has a wonderful plan and purpose for your life.

And unlike what usually happens at Christmas, we do not need to give God a gift in return. He gives to us unconditionally. All we need to do is thank Him for this gift and invite Him to be a part of our lives.

As you prepare for your Christmas celebrations next weekend, remember that there is a God in heaven who sees you, knows you better than you know yourself and who adores you so much that He has already given you a gift… the gift of eternal life with Him in heaven if you simply believe in Him and ask Him into your life… the greatest gift of all.
