Why do you do what you do?

Tuesday 24th April 2012

Have you ever had someone do something nice for you, but deep down, you knew they were only doing it because there was something in it for them? Often, people may do a lot of kind things or say a lot of kind words, but the reason why they are doing or saying those things is out of a selfish motivation.

Proverbs 21:2 (NIV) says, “People may think they are doing what is right, but the Lord examines the heart.”

This verse highlights that God is actually more interested in your motivations rather than your actions. He cares more about WHY you do what you do and say what you say. This is because your motivations reflect the quality of your character.

A Girl of Wisdom is self-aware and understands the reasons behind her words and actions. Who she is on the outside matches up with who she is on the inside. She is not falsely sweet to others in an attempt to manipulate for selfish gain. Her motivations are pure.

Spend this week consciously examining the things you do and the words you say and ask youself why you behaved that way. Take stock of your motivations- they say a lot more about your character than your outward behaviour.

The Power of One

Monday 15 August 2011.

“The Power of One” is one of my favourite movies. It’s about a young boy growing up in South Africa during the years of Apartheid who, in the midst of his own difficult circumstances, saw the injustice surrounding his country and decided to do something to change it.

There have been countless people throughout the ages who have made a difference in and through their life. Some of them are known to us – Jesus, Mother Teresa and Nelson Mandela come to mind. Even more people are unknown in the books of history but have still made a difference in the world around them.

Proverbs 31:10 (MSG) says, A good woman is hard to find and worth far more than diamonds. This chapter then goes on to describe the character of this woman in the various facets of her life, from house work to helping those in need.

Making a difference is not about fame or glamour. It’s done in the everyday things of life- from the way that you show love to those around you, to your words spoken both publicly and privately. It’s knowing that your life, the life of one person, can and will make a difference through the choices you make.

A Girl of Wisdom chooses to grow godly character within her life that overflows into the world around her. Regardless of what she’s doing or who she is with, she chooses to make a difference by reflecting Christ in all she does.

WHY do you do what you do?

Saturday 20th November 2010

God does not only watch what you do, but He also sees why you do it! A Girl of Wisdom understands that her motivations are just as important and as powerful as her actual words and actions.

Throughout my years in high school, it was so common to watch girls be really nice to the “popular group.” I’m sure you know what I mean! Their words and actions gave the message that they really liked the popular girls. However, everyone else knew that they were only behaving that way to be accepted or to avoid being bullied by that crowd… deep down, they didn’t really like them at all!!

Proverbs 16:2 (NLT) says, “People may be pure in their own eyes, but the Lord examines their motives.”

Have you ever reflected on things you have said or done and asked yourself, “Now why did I say or do that?” And have you every answered yourself truthfully?

The journey of self-awareness can be uncomfortable and confronting, but as you choose to take an honest look at your motivations, God can begin to shape you into more of the amazing girl that He desires you to be!

“Dear God, thank you that you care so much for me that you don’t just watch what I do, but you are also interested in why I do what I do! I want to invite you to show me my motivations. Help me to understand my words and actions. Reveal to me things within my heart that need to change and give me the wisdom to know how to change those things. Amen.”
