What are you afraid of?

Sunday 20 November 2011

I am afraid of spiders. There’s something about those eight little creepy crawly legs that just give me the goose bumps. I’m not exactly sure what it is about them that I’m afraid of. Is it getting bitten? Having one jump on me? Probably a bit of both. All I know is that every time I see a spider, my heart starts to race, my breathing quickens and I know that I feel afraid.

The dictionary describes fear as, “A distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, evil, pain etc, whether the threat is real or imagined, it is the feeling or condition of being afraid.”

So what are you afraid of? This can be a scary question to ask yourself! There are more than just spiders that people are afraid of in this world. People have been known to be afraid of many things such as the fear of losing a loved one, fear of dying, of failing, of succeeding, of not being liked… the list goes on and on!

The problem with fear is that it can be debilitating. And this is the kind of fear that I am writing about today. The kind of fear that is unhealthy and overwhelms, whether consciously or subconsciously, and prevents you from living life to the full as God intended.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT) says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

You may not understand everything that happens in this life and certainly can’t predict the way things will always work out in your life. There are a lot of unknowns which, in and of itself, can lead to more fear. One thing is certain though: God is faithful, He is trustworthy and just.

Learning to trust God is a journey, a path that a Girl of Wisdom chooses to walk along. For some more thoughts on fear, stay posted for the next blog – “Three Thoughts on Overcoming Fear.”
